Netflix to Add 17 New Titles This Week – Here’s the 3 Most Interesting

Netflix this week (August 5-11, 2024) plans to add 17 TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here’s the three most interesting, in my humble opinion. (It’s another Olympics week so the pickings are a bit slim, to be brutally honest.)

The Umbrella Academy, Season 4
The Netflix original series features a set of adopted sibling superheroes who cast aside their differences to solve their father’s death and rid the world of evil forces. Before you say — Another superhero show!? — The Umbrella Academy has generated relatively strong reviews. “The Umbrella Academy unfurls an imaginative yarn with furtive emotion and an exceptionally compelling ensemble, but the series’ dour sensibility often clashes with its splashy genre trappings,” says Rotten Tomatoes with a flourish. The cast includes Elliott Page, Tom Hopper, Aidan Gallagher and Robert Sheehan. Season four debuts Thursday, August 8. (First three seasons now available on Netflix.)

Secret World of Sound with David Attenborough
The doc uses advanced audio technology to discover how animals communicate with each other, including how baby caiman talk from within the egg and how lions and hyaenas battle using sound. And speaking of great sounds, the show is narrated by Sir David Attenborough. Debuts Wednesday, August 7.

Inside the Mind of a Dog
The dog doc, which is narrated by Rob Lowe, purports to answer the question: Do dogs really love us? Using sophisticated analysis of canine facial movements, the answer seems to be yes, perhaps even more than certain humans. Okay, I made up the last part, but as the owner of two dogs, Inside the Mind of a Dog is catnip to me, if you’ll forgive the mixed metaphor. Debuts Friday, August 9.
