Hulu this week (July 29-August 4, 2024) plans to add 54 new TV shows and movies to its subscription Video on Demand service. Here’s the four most interesting, in my humble opinion:

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
Hollywood this year decided to reboot the old ‘apes in control’ franchise and — surprise, surprise — it worked! Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which was released in May 2024, has grossed nearly $400 million worldwide. The film tells the story of a young chimp named Noa (played by Owen Teague) who discovers that a band of hunters are coming for his clan with electronic weapons. He must alert his clan and rival groups before it’s too late. The plot is predictable, but the critics praised Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes for its non-stop action and moral undertones. Debuts Friday, August 2.

Futurama, Season 12 Premiere
Matt Groening’s adult animated series is back as a Hulu original after a 10-year hiatus from Fox and Comedy Central. The show features a professional slacker who’s awakened from a cryogenically induced sleep after 1,000 years. He’s taken in by his sole descendant who gets him a job at a delivery service. Season 12 premiere debuts Monday, July 29.

Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Director Kathryn Bigelow’s intense 2012 drama starring Jessica Chastain as a relentless CIA agent who hunts for the masterminds behind the 9/11 attack on America. The film was seen by some as glorifying the extralegal tactics required to obtain leads in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. But it fairly characterizes the pain and zeal felt by the intelligence/military personnel at the time. And Chastain is riveting as a CIA case officer who can’t sit still (literally) until she finds her man. Debuts Thursday, August 1.

Raising Arizona (1987)
The 1987 Coen Brothers movie stars Nic Cage and Holly Hunter as a dysfunctional young couple whose solution to infertility is kidnapping. That may not sound like a suitable premise for a comedy, even a black comedy, but you don’t know the Coens, do you? This is brilliant filmmaking overflowing with laughs and masterful turns from Cage and Hunter. Debuts Thursday, August 1.
