This is one in a series of articles that will offer recommendations on how to get the best picture from your television. Today, we look at the best picture settings for Sony 4K TVs.

Sony has long been regarded as offering an outstanding TV picture thanks to the company’s insistence on precision and consistency in manufacturing its sets. However, with the advent of 4K TVs, it’s no longer as simple as plugging in your TV and expecting the best picture possible on screen. The 4K TV, even one from Sony, requires some fine tuning before you start watching.

Why It Matters to Calibrate Your Sony 4K TV

Like 4K TV models from other top-quality brands such as LG and Samsung, a full-feature Sony set might set you back well over $1,000 so you want assurances that you are getting the biggest bang for your buck. If the picture is less than what it can be, you might as well spend considerably less for a lesser brand model. So let’s examine some recommendations for picture settings in your Sony 4K TV. And as we have noted in our articles on other TV settings, these are recommendations and not rigid requirements. If you don’t like the way your TV looks after making these adjustments, please change them to your satisfaction by selecting Reset in your Advanced Settings under Picture. This is your viewing experience. Now, that said…

The Best Picture Settings For Sony 4K TVs

Picture Mode
— Cinema or Movie will deliver the best balanced and natural picture for films.

— If the movie is in HDR, High Dynamic Range, try HDR Dark.

— If you’re watching sports, use the Sports mode to reduce motion blur.

— Finally, if you’re playing games, Gaming.

Brightness

— If the room is bright, try a setting between 70 and 100; you can reduce that by 20 or so if you have a Sony OLED TV.

— If the room is dark or dimly lit, set Brightness at 30-50 if you have a Sony LED TV and 20-40 if you have an OLED which doesn’t need as bright a picture to display blacks.

Contrast

— Set it between 85 and 90 which will ensure detail is clear in every scene.

Black Level

Between 45 and 50 is best.

Color

Between 45 and 50. Be careful you don’t oversaturate the colors, a temptation that some viewers have. You want the colors looking realistic. not out of a coloring book.

Hue/Tint

Zero is best.

Sharpness

Like Color, some people tend to set Sharpness higher than needed. But the best setting is between 30 and 50. If you go higher, the picture will start to look jagged.

Color Temperature

Warm or Warm2 should work best on a Sony TV. That will give you a more realistic and detailed picture.

Motion Settings

If you’re watching sports, Standard should reduce motion blur. If a show is non-sports, set the Motion setting to Off to avoid the Soap Opera Effect.

Local Dimming

Set to High which will enhance contrast, particularly in dark scenes.

Finally, if youโ€™re in the market for a Sony TV, hereโ€™s an Amazon link to some Sony setsย of different sizes and models. The TV Answer Man site will receive a small commission from the sale of a set from this link.

Happy viewing, everyone, and stay safe.
