Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max, this week (July 21-27, 2024) plans to add 10 new TV shows and movies. Here are the three most interesting, in my humble opinion:

Charlie Hustle & The Matter of Pete Rose (HBO Original)
The four-part HBO documentary will examine Rose’s rise and fall in Major League Baseball and whether he belongs in the Hall of Fame despite admitting he gambled on baseball. There are few figures in sports history more polarizing than Pete and this doc, which will include interviews with the MLB hit champion, will surely add to the debate. Debuts Wednesday, July 24 with two episodes; the last two episodes air the next night. (Sidebar: I interviewed Pete once when I was editor of Satellite DIRECT magazine and I asked him about gambling on baseball. He was evasive, which was not unexpected, but still defiant that he didn’t deserve the lifetime ban from the game. I suspect we’ll see more of the same here and I will be watching.)

Secrets & Spies: A Nuclear Game (CNN Original)
The documentary chronicles the last vestiges of the U.S.-Soviet Union Cold War in the 1980s, particularly the two countries’ efforts to turn opposing spies into double agents. The spy vs. spy gambit almost backfired with the dissemination of disinformation nearly severing diplomatic relations at the most crucial time. Debuts Tuesday, July 23.

Knox Goes Away (2023)
Michael Keaton stars (and directs the film) as a contract killer who’s suffering from dementia. His condition leads to him flubbing an assignment so his crime boss (Al Pacino!) gives him the old offer he can’t refuse. I haven’t seen the film and it generated mixed reviews when it was released last year. But with Keaton and Pacino in a neo noir thriller, watching it is an offer I can’t refuse. Debuts Saturday, July 26.
