Max to Remove 21 Movies This Month – Here’s 4 to Watch Before They Leave

Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max, has revealed at its web site that it will remove 21 movies from its lineup after July 31, 2024. Here are the four you should watch before they leave, in my humble opinion.

Fargo (1996)
The Oscar-winning film from the Coen Brothers stars William H. Macy and Frances McDormand (wife to Joel Coen) who both turn in career performances as a bumpkin car salesman and pregnant police chief respectively. Steve Buscemi and Peter Stomare are equal parts funny and creepy as two kidnappers who bungle the job. This is comedy as black as a 6 a.m. 7-Eleven coffee and no film buff should wait another day before seeing it. Brilliant, brilliant stuff from all involved. You betcha!

Bonnie & Clyde (1967)
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway star in this fanciful retelling of the 1930s bank robbing team of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker. The film, which was inspired by the era’s New Wave films in France, puts style ahead of substance but it’s a juicy mix of iconoclastic acting and class warfare. (The cinematic Clyde justifies his actions by saying the banking industry is exploiting the poor while the real Clyde was merely a bloodthirsty thief.) Both stars are in fine form and the direction (Arthur Penn) and script (Robert Benton and David Newman) are first rate. Also look for fun supporting performances from Gene Hackman, Estelle Parsons, Gene Wilder and Michael J. Pollard.

The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
The action-packed film, directed by Paul Greengrass, stars Matt Damon as an intelligence agent who seeks vengeance on his former government handlers for a myriad of misdeeds. This is the third installment in the Bourne series and each film, including this one, is well crafted and staged with Damon flawless as the troubled but tenacious Mr. Bourne.

A Most Violent Year (2014)
Oscar Isaac stars as a 1980s New York heating oil executive whose business is overrun by criminal elements, and a ruthless prosecutor looking for high-profile scalps. His wife, played with panache by Jessica Chastain, implores him to fight fire with fire, figuratively if not literally, but he resists until he can resist no more. And that’s when it becomes…a most violent year. The film, directed and written by J. C. Chandor (Margin Call, All Is Lost), is a throwback to the great gritty dramas of the 1970s that made stars out of Pacino, Hoffman, De Niro and others. Isaac is perfect for the role and it’s a shame he doesn’t get a chance to do more films like A Most Violent Year instead of yet another Star Wars clone.
