Peacock yesterday added 114 new movies to its subscription Video on Demand service. Here are the four best, in my humble opinion:

Jeff Bridges is The Dude in The Big Lebowski.

The Big Lebowski (1998)
The 1998 cult comedy from the Coen Bros. features an iconic Los Angeles slacker (Jeff Bridges) named ‘The Dude’ who accidentally becomes the focus of a murder investigation.  Only Joel and Ethan Coen could take this farfetched plot and turn it into a cultural mainstay and masterpiece that resonates with multiple generations. The flawless supporting cast includes John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, David Huddleston, Julianne Moore, and John Turturro as Jesus, a bowler with a strange fetish for his ball.

V For Vendetta (2006)
V For Vendetta. Hugo Weaving (and a Guy Fawkes mask) stars as a revolutionary terrorist in the future who plans to overthrow a fascist government. The 2006 film, which is beautifully photographed, stirred some controversy as well for seemingly embracing violence as a means of protest. But you be the judge. V For Vendetta also stars Natalie Portman as the revolutionary’s reluctant sidekick.

Scarlett Johansson in Lost In Translation.

Lost In Translation (2003)
Lost in Translation is a hidden gem from director Sofia Coppola (Priscilla) who captures the human need for connection through the weary eyes of an over-the-hill TV actor (Bill Murray) and a beautiful ingenue (Scarlett Johansson). Set in the over-crowded but still isolating city of Tokyo, the film’s delicate exploration of cross-cultural encounters, coupled with Murray and Johansson’s on-screen chemistry, evokes an indelible and bittersweet emotional resonance. Beautiful, charming movie.

Alien (1979)
Director Ridley Scott’s sci-fi masterpiece redefined the science fiction genre. Sigourney Weaver’s portrayal of Ripley is a tour de force, showcasing both vulnerability and resilience in the face of unimaginable horror. The meticulous attention to detail in the production design, combined with a smart and suspenseful script, keeps viewers on the edge of their seats throughout the film. And be prepared to look away at the lunch scene. You know the one.

Honorable mention: Kill Bill (both volumes), Back to the Future, The Last Temptation of Christ, Ray,
