Amazon’s Prime Video this month plans to add 135 movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the 10 best, in my humble opinion.
Best Movies on Amazon Prime Video April 2025
Annie Hall (1977)
Woody Allen’s comedy masterpiece is based loosely on the actor/director’s romance with Diane Keaton, who plays the title character. The film, which captured the 1978 Academy Award for Best Picture, combines Woody’s comic brilliance with an insightful take on relationships and human foibles. Such a great movie and one that filmmakers have tried to replicate ever since with varying degrees of success. (Looking at you, Rob Reiner, director of When Harry Met Sally.) Debuts April 1.

Fargo (1996)
The Oscar-winning film from the Coen Brothers stars William H. Macy and Frances McDormand (wife to Joel Coen) who both turn in career performances as a bumpkin car salesman and pregnant police chief respectively. Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare are equal parts funny and creepy as two kidnappers who bungle the job. This is comedy as black as a 6 a.m. 7-Eleven coffee and no film buff should wait another day before seeing it. Brilliant, brilliant stuff from all involved. You betcha! Debuts April 1.
Bull Durham (1988)
Bull Durham, the 1988 baseball comedy from director Ron Shelton (a former minor league baseball player in the Orioles organization), stars Kevin Costner as a career-long minor leaguer who’s summoned to tutor a talented but dimwitted pitcher (Tim Robbins). Like Platoon, Shelton’s personal experience in the bush leagues brings a realism to this fun film. Debuts April 1.

Hoosiers (1986)
Based on a true story, the late great Gene Hackman stars as the basketball coach at a small Indiana high school who inspires his team to dream it can win the state tournament despite being undersized and under-appreciated. One of the greatest sports movies ever made, Hoosiers over the years has also inspired viewers with its simple but powerful message that anything can happen if you just believe in yourself. In addition to prime Hackman, Dennis Hopper is touching as his booze-soaked assistant coach as is Barbara Hershey as a fellow teacher. Debuted on April 1.
Lost in Translation (2003)
Lost in Translation is a hidden gem from director Sofia Coppola (Priscilla) who captures the human need for connection through the weary eyes of an over-the-hill TV actor (Bill Murray) and a beautiful ingenue (Scarlett Johansson). Set in the over-crowded but still isolating city of Tokyo, the film’s delicate exploration of cross-cultural encounters, coupled with Murray and Johansson’s on-screen chemistry, evokes an indelible and bittersweet emotional resonance. Beautiful, charming movie. Debuts April 1.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
The 1998 cult comedy from the Coen Bros. features an iconic Los Angeles slacker (Jeff Bridges) named ‘The Dude’ who accidentally becomes the focus of a murder investigation. Only Joel and Ethan Coen could take this farfetched plot and turn it into a cultural mainstay and masterpiece that resonates with multiple generations. The flawless supporting cast includes John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, David Huddleston, Julianne Moore, and John Turturro as Jesus, a bowler with a strange fetish for his ball. Debuts April 1.

Rain Man (1988)
Tom Cruise stars in this Barry Levinson-directed comedy/drama about a hustler (Cruise) who kidnaps his autistic long-lost older brother (Dustin Hoffman) when he learns their late father left an entire inheritance to him. The film becomes a lesson in blood ties and personal awakenings when the two set out on a cross- country trip to Los Angeles. In lesser hands, and a lesser cast, Rain Man could have resulted in a run-of-the-mill buddy movie albeit with a twist (autism.) But Cruise and Hoffman are so great together that their relationship touches your heart as well as offer some life lessons. Levinson also shows why he was one of the great directors of the 1980/90s (although highly underrated) with some fabulous set pieces (particularly the Vegas scenes). Great film! Debuts April 1.
Out of Sight (1988)
Out of Sight, the 1998 comedy/drama from director Steven Soderbergh which stars George Clooney as a bank robber who’s tracked (and, uh, pursued) by a federal agent played wonderfully by Jennifer Lopez. The great cast also includes Michael Keaton, Albert Brooks, Don Cheadle, Ving Rhames, Nancy Allen, Samuel L. Jackson…and too many more wonderful folks to name here. Watch this movie. It’s classic Soderbergh. Debuts April 1.

Dazed And Confused (1993)
Dazed and Confused, the charming and now iconic 1993 comedy from director Richard Linklater about the last day of school in a small Texas town. Linklater has a gift of making the small things in life seem larger than life and there’s no better showcase for his talents than this classic. Debuts April 1.
Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)
Directed by Woody Allen, this is a funny and sometimes poignant examination of complex relationships and human frailties. Set in New York City, the film weaves together the lives of three sisters, played brilliantly by Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey, and Dianne Wiest. Their stories, marked by love, jealousy, and existential crises (a consistent Woody theme), are portrayed with sensitivity and depth. Debuts April 1.
