This is the first in a series of articles that will explain in simple words what a new TV product or industry term means and/or how it works. Today, we examine Upscaled 4K TV.

TV Answer Man, could you please explain what upscaled 4K TV is for live sports. I see that term but don’t get it. Why is it called upscaled? – Jim, Trenton, New Jersey.

What Is Upscaled 4K TV?
Upscaling is the process when one video format is converted to another. For example, for its college football and basketball broadcasts, Fox takes the 1080p HD HDR signal and converts it to a 4K format which is then transmitted to the home. Upscaling 4K is not considered as good as native 4K, but the inclusion of HDR (High Dynamic Range) can offer heightened colors and vividness. ESPN and most other networks that offer 4K programming also upscale their 4K broadcasts from a 1080p HD signal.

What Does Upscaled 4K TV Mean For Live Sports?
For sports fans, an upscaled 4K broadcast elevates the viewing experience because it enhances the brightness and colors. Think greener football fields and more vivid uniforms.

How Does Upscaled 4K Differ From Native 4K?
Native 4K is when the broadcaster uses 4K cameras and other 4K equipment to produce the live feed. The pure 4K signal is then transmitted to the home in 4K. Consequently, the native 4K broadcast can provide additional detail which can be particularly noticeable in a large-screen TV. The upscaled 4K broadcast may lack some of the details and sharpness found in a native 4K event.

Why Don’t More Networks Use Native 4K If It’s Better?
NESN, the regional TV channel for the Boston Red Sox and Bruins, is currently the only network that’s producing their live broadcasts in native 4K. The reason is economics. It’s more costly and labor-intensive to do a native 4K broadcast because you need the special 4K cameras and equipment as well as more production people.
