Max this week (March 10-16, 2025) plans to add 15 new movies and TV shows to its streaming lineup. Here’s the one you don’t want to miss, in my humble opinion:
Celtics City – Max/HBO Original
The Boston Celtics are arguably (the argument would come from Los Angeles) the best pro basketball franchise to ever take the court and this entertaining and insightful nine-part documentary on the team from longtime fan Bill Simmons (and others) seals the case that it’s also the most interesting. From coach Red Auerbach’s insistence on integrating the team in the 1950s and 60s to its epic battles (Larry Bird vs. Magic Johnson; Bill Russell vs. Wilt Chamberlain) with the Lakers to its present-day glory, Celtics City captures it all, leaving other teams, well, green with jealousy.
Episode one, which premiered last Monday, chronicled the city of Boston’s lukewarm reaction to the team’s introduction of black players in the 1950s. Episode two, which will be added to Max today, will focus on the incredible championship run of center Bill Russell and his sometimes controversial path in the Civil Rights movement.
First episode of Celtics City debuted on Max on March 3 and is still available. Episode two debuts on Max on Monday, March 10. Future episodes every Monday through April 28.
More Picks This Week From Max
Speaking of basketball, Max on Tuesday, March 11 will add Kobe: The Making of a Legend, the CNN documentary on the late and great Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant. And on Thursday, the streamer will debut a Max/HBO original, The Parenting, a comedy horror film about a young couple whose weekend rental house is haunted – by ghosts and their overbearing parents. The supporting cast is impressive and alone makes this worth checking out: Brian Cox, Edie Falco, Parker Posey, Lisa Kudrow and Dean Norris.
