Max, the streaming service once known as HBO Max, plans to remove 48 movies from its lineup after January 31, 2025. Here are the three films you should definitely watch before they leave, in my humble opinion:
Taken (2008)
Liam Neeson plays a former CIA officer with a “particular set of skills” who puts them to good use when his teenaged daughter (Maggie Grace) is kidnapped by human traffickers in France. The plot is a worn movie trope but Neeson, a former boxer in real life, manages to turn it into a thrilling ride with splendid athletic work in the action scenes. Kudos, too, to director Pierre Morel who recently directed Amazon’s action thriller, Canary Black, starring Kate Beckinsale.
Parasite (2019)
The winner of the 2020 Oscar for Best Picture. The film, which is based in South Korea, is the story of a lower-class family that tricks a wealthy family into hiring them as their personal assistants. However, the scam backfires when the lower-class family encounters an unexpected turn of events once inside the luxurious house. Parasite is a suspenseful and thrilling look at class warfare disguised as a crime drama.
Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
Nicolas Cage is a polarizing actor, to be sure, with a long line of bizarre albeit often intriguing performances. However, Cage is dead solid perfect here as a failed businessman who decides to move to Las Vegas and drink himself to death. The raw and eerily realistic portrayal won him the 1996 Academy Award for Best Actor. Elizabeth Shue is also very good as a street walker who falls for Cage despite her best instincts. The film was based on a semi-autobiographical novel by John O’Brien who took his own life soon after selling the rights.
