Netflix, Max, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount Plus and Amazon’s Prime Video this weekend (January 9-12, 2025) plan to add 47 new TV shows and movies to their streaming lineups. Here’s the six most interesting, in my humble opinion:
American Primeval (Netflix original series)
Taylor Kitsch stars as a frontiersman in 1850s Oregon who will do anything to protect his land and loved ones from mercenaries and Native Americans. The six-part series, directed by Peter Berg (who has teamed with Kitsch on multiple projects, including Friday Night Lights), promises to chronicle the violent clash of cultures and religions in shaping the American West. The supporting cast includes Betty Gilpin, Shea Whigham and Dane DeHaan. Debuts on Netflix on Thursday, January 9.
Love Is Blind – Germany (Netflix Original – New Episodes)
Based on the American version of the Netflix dating series, a few dozen German men and women will take turns jumping into shielded pods to discuss life, sex and other trivial matters while searching for ‘the one.’ The show is more disposable than an ultra-soft box of Kleenex but it’s harmless and occasionally funny. And if you’re a 20something, it’s probably irresistible. Debuts Friday, January 10.
Bill Maher: Is Anyone Else Seeing This (HBO/Max Special)
The polarizing pundit/comedian will tackle the topical in this stand-up comedy special from the CIBC Theater in Chicago. Like him or not, Maher has perfected the art of getting attention and this performance will likely make some headlines (or, at least, social media buzz) the morning after. Debuts January 10.
The Pitt (Max/HBO Original Series)
Noah Wyle stars in this medical dramatic series about the hellish life of emergency room workers at a Pittsburgh hospital. Each episode will cover one-hour in the 15-hour day shift. R. Scott Gemmill, who won Emmys for his writing and producing on NBC’s landmark medical drama, ER (which also starred Wyle), is the showrunner here so that’s a good sign. Debuts January 9.
Sons of Ecstasy (Max Original Documentary)
In the 1990s, ecstasy replaced cocaine as the must-have illicit drug among the young and pampered set and no place was the demand for the pill more intense than Arizona. But the fight for the ecstasy market in the Grand Canyon state had some interesting competitors: The Gravano Mafia crime family (as in ‘Sammy the Bull’ Gravano) and a British stockbroker. This documentary looks at the unlikely war between the two polar opposites with current day interviews with the participants. Debuts January 9.
Hollywood Squares – Paramount Plus
If you wait long enough, the network executives will bring back whatever old show you used to watch religiously, or in this case, you were okay with it playing in the background while you did your household chores. Yes, the 1960s/70s game show, Hollywood Squares, is coming back with Nate Burleson replacing the late Peter Marshall as the host and Drew Barrymore subbing for the even later Paul Lynde in the center square. Debuts Thursday, January 9. (Requires Paramount Plus with Showtime plan; will also be on CBS.)
Amazon’s Prime Video will also stream exclusively the NFL Wild Card game between the Ravens and Steelers on Saturday, January 11, at 8 p.m. ET.
