Netflix, Paramount Plus, Hulu, Max, Amazon’s Prime Video and Peacock plan to add 39 new TV shows and movies this weekend (January 2-5, 2025). Here are the five most interesting, in my humble opinion:

The Fall Guy (2024) – Amazon
The Fall Guy stars Ryan Gosling as a Hollywood stunt man whose work in his ex-girlfriend’s (Emily Blunt) film gets complicated when the lead actor mysteriously disappears. The director asks him to find the actor which turns out to be his most dangerous stunt yet. The comedy/adventure film is one of the great popcorn movies of 2024, which means dim the lights, and your expectations, before viewing and you’ll enjoy. Debuts Thursday, January 2.

The Golden Globe Awards – Paramount Plus/CBS
Comedienne Nikki Glaser will host Hollywood’s annual salute to itself with The Brutalist, Emilia Perez and A Complete Unknown among the movies that will battle it out for the best film of 2024. It says here that no host will ever be able to replicate Ricky Gervais’ dismantling of Team Tinseltown when he hosted the GGAs in 2020. But Glaser has demonstrated on such venues as Thursday Night Football and Netflix’s Tom Brady roast that she’s willing to break a few eggs. Debuts Sunday, January 5 at 8 p.m. ET. (Requires Paramount Plus with Showtime plan; will also be on CBS.)

The Front Room (2024) – Max
Brandy stars as Belinda, a black pregnant college professor who reluctantly agrees to stay with her husband’s stepmother (Kathryn Hunter) after his father dies. The stepmother convinced her by promising to give Belinda and her husband the Dad’s sizable inheritance. However, after settling in, the couple soon begin experiencing religious-themed hallucinations and the stepmom may be a racist! The psychological horror film was directed (and written) by first-time directors (and brothers) Max and Sam Eggers (Brother Robert Eggers helmed the critically-acclaimed The Lighthouse and Nosferatu. Let’s see if Sam and Max can keep up.) Debuts Friday, January 3.

Lockerbie: A Search for Truth – Peacock Original
Colin Firth stars in this retelling of Dr. Jim Swire’s crusade to discover the truth behind the bombing of a 1988 Pan Am plane during a flight from London to New York, taking the lives of the 259 passengers including his daughter. Despite diplomatic cover-ups, Swire and other family members of those killed forced authorities to eventually trace the horrific act to the Libyan government. This five-episode Peacock original series chronicles their persistence and heroism in finding the truth. All five episodes debut Thursday, January 2.

Love Is Blind – Germany – Netflix Original
Based on the American version of the Netflix dating series, a few dozen German men and women will take turns jumping into shielded pods to discuss life, sex and other trivial matters while searching for ‘the one.’ The show is more disposable than an ultra-soft box of Kleenex but it’s harmless and occasionally funny. And if you’re a 20something, it’s probably irresistible. Debuts Friday, January 3.
