Netflix, Hulu, Max, Peacock and Amazon’s Prime Video this weekend (December 5-8, 2024) plan to add 98 new TV shows and movies to their streaming lineups. Here are the four most interesting, in my humble opinion:
Black Doves (Netflix Original)
Keira Knightley stars as a British spy whose reckless love affair puts her and everyone around her in danger. The 6-episode Netflix original series has been compared by one critic to Keanu Reeves’ John Wick which is high praise indeed. Debuts Thursday, December 5.
Thursday Night Football: Green Bay at Detroit – Amazon
Amazon’s TNF lineup has not always been sterling but look out on Thursday. The 9-3 Green Bay Packers will play the 11-1 Detroit Lions in an NFC North grudge match. The Lions are a 3.5 point favorite but the Pack needs a win to have a shot of edging out the Lions for the division crown. It should be an epic battle of two of the league’s best teams. Debuts Thursday, December 5. Coverage begins at 7 p.m. ET with the kickoff around 8:15 p.m. ET.
The Sticky – Amazon Original
Character actor extraordinaire Margo Martindale (Justified, The Americans) finally gets the above-the-title spotlight as a maple syrup farmer who cooks up a heist of the Quebec maple syrup surplus center when Canadian bureaucrats try to shut her farm down. Based on a real-life story, the Amazon original series sounds like a rare opportunity to watch a gifted actor like Martindale really cook (sorry for the double puns) and, if that’s not enough, it will also feature Jamie Lee Curtis in a supporting role. Debuts Friday, December 6.
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice (2024) – Max
Max will debut the Beetlejuice sequel, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, this Friday, December 6. The film picks up 36 years later with Lydia (Winona Ryder) as the host of a paranormal talk show who thinks she can see ghosts, including the notorious Betelgeuse, reprised with flawless panache by the great Michael Keaton. The supporting cast includes first film favorite Catherine O’Hara as well as some fun newcomers such as Jenna Ortega who plays Lydia’s skeptical daughter. Fun film for the entire family! Debuts Friday, December 6.
