This weekend (October 3-6, 2024), Netflix, Hulu, Amazon’s Prime Video and Max will add 47 TV shows and movies to their lineups. Here’s the four most interesting, in my humble opinion.

Salem’s Lot (2024) (Max Original)
Lewis Pullman stars as Ben Mears, an author who returns to his childhood home in search of inspiration. However, instead of a muse, he discovers a vampire who is preying upon the town. Based on the Stephen King novel, the film was originally scheduled to be released in 2022 but suffered some Covid-related production delays. The actors’ strike in 2023 caused yet another delay but it will finally get its showcase when it debuts on Max on Thursday, October 3.

FACEOFF: Inside the NHL – Amazon’s Prime Video
To help drop the puck on Friday’s NHL regular season opener, Amazon will premiere a six-episode documentary on some of the best players in the game including Boston’s David Pastrnak and Jeremy Swayman, Colorado’s Gabriel Landeskog, Edmonton’s Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman, among others. The show is promising unprecedented access to the players behind the scenes and on the ice. Debuts Friday, October 4 on Amazon’s Prime Video.

Hold Your Breath (2024) – Hulu
Sarah Paulson stars as a 1930s era Mom in the Oklahoma dust bowl who becomes convinced a sinister force is causing illness to her daughters and others. Few actresses play horror better than Paulson which alone makes this one of the weekend’s most interesting titles. Debuts on Hulu on Thursday, October 3.

The Franchise, season one (HBO Original) – Max
Himesh Patel and Aya Cash star in this Jon Brown-led satire of how superhero movies get made. I love the premise — what can be more pretentious than a superhero movie and thus worthy of satire? — and showrunner Brown was a writer on HBO’s brilliant Succession series and The Veep. Sounds good. Debuts on Max and HBO on Friday, October 4.
