Netflix, Hulu, Amazon’s Prime Video, and Max this week (September 23-28, 2024) will add 45 new TV shows and movies to their lineups. Here’s the three to watch, in my humble opinion.
Mr. McMahon (Netflix Original)
Co-produced by The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, the six-episode original Netflix docuseries will chronicle the amazing highs and lows in the career of disgraced wrestling promoter Vince McMahon. The show will include interviews with McMahon himself (before he exited under a cloud of sexual misconduct allegations) as well as family members, business associates and pro wrestling icons. If you’re not familiar with Mr. McMahon’s career, or even if you are, you will likely be amazed by what you see and hear. There has arguably been no one else like him — for good and bad — in sports and entertainment over the last several decades and his story is the stuff of fiction. Debuts on Netflix on Wednesday, September 25.
Evolution of the Black Quarterback (2024) (Amazon Original)
For younger fans, it may seem quaint to regard the concept of a ‘black quarterback’ as something special. But just a few decades ago, many coaches and general managers believed that an African American wasn’t smart enough to handle the duties and would often draft a standout college QB only to switch him to cornerback or wide receiver in training camp. This eight-episode Amazon original documentary examines how the league’s thinking changed over the years and why the ‘black quarterback’ now dominates in the person of such superstars as Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts. Debuts on Amazon’s Prime Video on Tuesday, September 24.
Thursday Night Football: Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants (Amazon)
And speaking of black quarterbacks, Dak Prescott will lead his Dallas Cowboys against the New York Giants in Amazon’s Thursday Night Football game. Thursday on Amazon Prime Video. Pre-game coverage starts at 7 p.m. ET with kickoff expected around 8:15 p.m. ET.
