This weekend (September 19-22, 2024), Netflix, Hulu, Amazon’s Prime Video, and Max will add 23 new TV shows and movies to their lineups. Here’s the three most interesting, in my humble opinion.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story – Netflix
From the Ryan Murphy pulp factory comes Monsters, The Lyle and Erik Menendez, a nine-episode retelling of the real-life 1996 slaying of a wealthy Beverly Hills couple at the hands of their narcissistic sons. The crime has previously been picked over by numerous Hollywood production teams, but this one promises to be different thanks to the performance by Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men) as the sons’ allegedly abusive father, Jose Menendez. The strong supporting cast also includes Murphy regulars Chloe Sevigny as the mother, Kitty Menendez, and Nathan Lane as gossip columnist Dominick Dunne. All nine episodes debut Thursday, September 19.

The Penguin (HBO/Max Original)
The HBO eight-episode limited series (meaning there won’t be a second season) stars Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin, the archvillain who was first introduced in director Matt Reeves’ The Batman which starred Robert Pattinson as The Caped Crusader. The Penguin, which bumps Reeves to executive producer while Lauren LeFranc will play showrunner, will chronicle the little man’s rise to power in Gotham City, one week after the events of The Batman. This will be must-viewing for comic book fans, particularly Batman devotees, and the early reviews are glowing. Debuts Thursday, September 19 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and will then be available to stream on Max. Subsequent episodes will air Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET starting on September 29.

WNBA on Prime Video: Washington Mystics vs. Indiana Fever – Amazon
Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever will visit the Washington Mystics on Amazon’s Prime Video on September 19 at 7 p.m. ET. If you haven’t watched Clark yet, she’s a revelation with an amazing skill set that makes her the likely winner of the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year award. (Sorry, Angel.) Airs on Thursday, September 19 at 7 p.m. ET.
