The TV Answer Man –Follow me on X.
Amazon’s Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, Max and Peacock this weekend (August 29-September 1, 2024) plan to add 350 new TV shows and movies to their streaming lineups. While there are plenty of fun new additions to peruse, here are the three most interesting new titles, in my humble opinion:
The Fall Guy (2024) – Peacock
Peacock gets another streaming debut with a recent theatrical film with The Fall Guy which stars Ryan Gosling as a Hollywood stunt man whose work in his ex-girlfriend’s (Emily Blunt) film gets complicated when the lead actor mysteriously disappears. The director asks him to find the actor which turns out to be his most dangerous stunt yet. The comedy/adventure film is one of the great popcorn movies of the year, which means dim the lights, and your expectations, before viewing and you’ll enjoy. Debuts Friday, August 30 on Peacock.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power S2 (2024) – Amazon’s Prime Video
Season two of Amazon’s original (and very expensive) Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will debut today (August 29.). Based on the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, Rings of Power tells the tale of the second age of Tolkien’s Middle Earth when elves and men must unite to stop evil forces, personified by the Dark Lord Sauron. The show, which reportedly has cost Amazon well over $1 billion in licensing and production costs, was supposed to match HBO’s Game of Thrones myth for myth. But the response to season one was mixed although there’s no denying its beauty and sophisticated scene designs. Season two debuts on Thursday, August 29 on Amazon’s Prime Video.
Jaws (1975) – Netflix
I know. How can I pick a movie that’s nearly 50 years old as one of the most interesting new titles of the weekend? But the big fish drama from director Steven Spielberg remains one of the tautest and most suspenseful movies ever made with outstanding performances from Roy Scheider as the town sheriff, Richard Dreyfuss and the marine biologist and Robert Shaw as the crafty boat captain. And what a great time to watch (or rewatch) the film with summer almost over. Debuts Sunday, September 1 on Netflix.
