Netflix, Hulu, Amazon & Max to Add 226 New Titles This Weekend – Here’s the 3 Most Interesting

Okay, many Americans are now glued to the NBC-owned channels to watch the Olympics from Paris. But there are a bunch of new non-sports shows coming this weekend to the leading streaming services, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon’s Prime Video and Max. In fact, there will be 226 new shows and movies coming to those four streamers this weekend. And here’s the three most interesting, in my humble opinion:
Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes (HBO Original)
The star of such epic films as Cleopatra and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (and the femme fatale in epic marriages to Eddie Fisher and Richard Burton, among many others) was the most famous woman of her time. Her every word, every move, was catnip to an adoring public and obsessed media. In August, Max will look back at why Liz Taylor was the original ‘It Girl’ with a new documentary based around newly discovered interviews in her prime. Debuts Saturday, August 3 at 8 p.m. ET on Max.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
Hollywood this year decided to reboot the old ‘apes in control’ franchise and — surprise, surprise — it worked! Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which was released in May 2024, has grossed nearly $400 million worldwide. The film tells the story of a young chimp named Noa (played by Owen Teague) who discovers that a band of hunters are coming for his clan with electronic weapons. He must alert his clan and rival groups before it’s too late. The plot is predictable, but the critics praised Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes for its non-stop action and moral undertones. Debuts Friday, August 2 on Max.
Joe Rogan: Burn the Boats — Netflix Comedy Special
This host of the hugely popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, returns to stand-up comedy with a live performance streamed exclusively on Netflix. Rogan, who often espouses conspiratorial and conservative views, is sure to alienate some here but there’s no doubt he’s a funny guy. And if you’re looking for some post-performance laughs, head over to X where you can read the comments from the alienated crowd. Debuts Saturday, August 3, at 10 p.m. ET on Netflix.
