Will the 2024 Paris Olympics Be In 4K?

TV Answer Man, do you know if the Olympics will be in 4K this month? I haven’t heard anything about it. — Dale, Pittsburgh. 

Dale, the 2024 Summer Olympics from Paris will be held from July 26 to August 11. NBC has the exclusive broadcast rights in the United States which means the games will air on NBC, Peacock, Telemundo, Universo, USA Network, E!, CNBC and the Golf Channel. The easiest way to watch (without channel hopping) will be Peacock which will stream every event live.

But determining whether the games will be in 4K is not so easy. The short answer is that they will be available in 4K. Where? Fubo, Optimum and Comcast have revealed in press releases or web site posts that they will offer a 4K feed but I have not seen any other providers say so as of this writing. I suspect DIRECTV, Dish, YouTube TV and others will announce 4K coverage at some point but that’s not confirmed.

I’ve asked NBC for more details on its 4K plans but they say they are not ready to provide them. So as of now, we don’t have details such as a full 4K provider list, whether the 4K feed will be upscaled or native 4K, and whether they will be offered in 4K on Peacock. Hopefully the network will divulge more details soon and, when it does, we will provide that information here. (NBC has posted a comprehensive FAQ on watching the Olympics but there is no information on 4K; there is a question about HD, Lord help me.)

However, as I noted in a recent commentary, the networks don’t believe 4K is a top priority so it may be a while before we get more information.
