TV Answer Man, YouTube says on its NFL Sunday Ticket page that you save more when you get the Ticket with the YouTube TV bundle. Is that true? — Steve, Fairfax, Virginia.

Steve, the NFL Sunday Ticket is now available as a standalone plan (no other sub required) on YouTube Primetime Channels for $449 for the entire season. YouTube TV offers the Ticket for only $349 if you subscribe to its live streaming service which starts at $72.99 a month. And the NFL Sunday Ticket page now says you will “save more” if you get the YouTube TV Ticket bundle in four installments of $160.24 each.

But is that really true? Depends upon your definition of “save.”

If you do the four $160 installments now, you will wind up paying $640 over the next four months, which will include both the Sunday Ticket fee and YouTube TV’s base subscription. But after that, you will need to keep your YouTube TV sub throughout the NFL season to watch the Ticket. So tag on another $72.99 a month until January starting in August when the four installments have been paid up. You’re now paying more than $1,000 from now through the end of the year.

If you get the Sunday Ticket via YouTube Primetime now, the cost is just $449. Period. It seems to me that is the real definition of ‘save more.’

However, I understand why YouTube TV says you will save more with the bundle. The cost of the Ticket with the bundle is $349 compared to $449 on YouTube Primetime Channels. That is a $100 savings on the Ticket although you will wind up paying hundreds of dollars more to keep your YouTube TV sub and the Ticket.
