Paramount Plus’ Star Trek Starfleet Academy: Cancelled Or Renewed?

TV Answer Man, I just finished the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and liked it very much. Do you know if they will have a second season? – Jimmy, Roanoke, Virginia.

Jimmy, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the sixth Star Trek-themed show from Paramount in the last nine years, just wrapped its first season. The Paramount Plus show stars Holly Hunter as the captain of the USS Athena and chancellor of the Starfleet Academy where young cadets compete to be ship officers. The supporting cast includes the great Paul Giamatti as a heavily made-up part Klingon and Robert Picardo as The Doctor, reprising his role from the Star Trek: Voyager series from a time far, far away.

Star Trek Starfleet Academy has been a polarizing series with conservative critics saying it’s too ‘woke.’ However, the show’s Rotten Tomatoes critical score is 87 although its audience score is only 57.

So, will Star Trek Starfleet Academy have a second season, you ask?

Jimmy, I have good news and bad news for you. There will be a second season; in fact, the show just finished production on season two. However, Paramount today confirmed that the show will be cancelled after the second season airs. (The second season debut date has yet to be announced.)

Here’s the statement from Paramount:

“We’re incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to life. The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the Star Trek universe in exciting new ways. We’re grateful to (executive producers) Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and the entire cast and crew who pushed storytelling boundaries in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s vision. We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was accomplished with this series.”

No official explanation on why the series will close after season two. But that sub-par audience score at Rotten Tomatoes is a strong clue.
