The TV Answer Man – Buy Me a Coffee!
Like Netflix, Amazon’s Prime Video service posts a daily Top 10 list of the TV series and movies that are most popular with its subscribers on that day. Let’s take a look at today’s (January 8, 2026) top titles and see how many you have watched.
10. Playmate (2025)
What Kind of Movie: Action Comedy
Who’s In It: Kevin James, Alan Ritchson
Kevin James and Alan Ritchson (Reacher) star in this action/comedy film about two Dads whose kids’ play date turns into a fight for survival when a band of mercenaries decide to attack Ritchson’s character who may be more than your average stay-at-home father. Playmate is Ritchson’s first step in the action-to-comedy path blazed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
9. A Minecraft Movie (2025)
What Kind of Movie: Action Comedy
Who’s In It: Jason Momoa, Jack Black
Jason Momoa and Jack Black star in this video game adaption about a group of goofs who break through a portal into a cubic world and then must discover a way to return. The film was a huge box office hit (roughly $1 billion worldwide) albeit a moderate success with the critics; Rotten Tomatoes gave it a lackluster score of 48. But if you’re a Minecraft fan, it’s irresistible fun with both Momoa and Black bringing their comedic A game.
8. Year 10 (2025)
What Kind of Movie: Horror
Who’s In It: Toby Goodger, Duncan Lacroix
This is arguably the biggest surprise on the top 10 list. Year 10, which includes a cast of no-names (sorry, Toby Goodger), is a low-budget horror film about a post-apocalyptic community that has turned to cannibalism to survive. However, one man fights back to save humanity and his girlfriend.
7. Night Manager (Season one)
What Kind of Show: Drama
Who’s In It: Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie
In season one, Tom Hiddleston stars as a former British intelligence officer working as a hotel night manager who’s recruited to help bring down a dangerous international arms dealer (Hugh Laurie from House). The six-episode series was a taut thriller with riveting performances from Hiddleston, Laurie and Elizabeth Debicki as the femme fatale caught between the two men. In season two, which debuts on Amazon on Sunday, Hiddleston is living in hiding under an assumed name but soon must return to action when he spots another dangerous arms dealer (Diego Calva from Babylon) up to no good.
6. House of David (2025)
What Kind of Movie: Religious Drama
Who’s In It: Michael Iskander
Michael Iskander stars as the biblical figure, David, the king of ancient Israel, in this Amazon original historical dramatic series. The show chronicles his rise to power and awakening as a religious leader. House of David’s top six ranking reflects the growing audience for spiritual fare. The movie debuted on Amazon 11 months ago and here it is still on the Top 10.
5. Sinners (2025)
What Kind of Movie: Action/Horror
Who’s In It: Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld
Michael B. Jordan stars in dual roles as twins who return to their hometown in 1930s Mississippi to combat an evil force (vampires.) Directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners has been one of the smash hits of 2025, generating nearly $300 million at the domestic box office. And the critics are still raving about Sinners, calling it an exciting and insightful thriller with a horror overlay. I watched Sinners when it first debuted on HBO Max and was absolutely floored at how riveting it was. Michael B. Jordan flashed a Denzel-like coolness and swag that he had never really exhibited before, even in Coogler’s Creed movies. Fun movie!
4. The Naked Gun (2025)
What Kind of Movie: Slapstick Comedy
Who’s In It: Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson
The Naked Gun? Shirley, you can’t be serious! Yes, we are serious that The Naked Gun remake with Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin, Jr. is seriously funny. (And don’t call me Shirley.) Neeson, perhaps best known for his unique skill set in the Taken action franchise, displays a surprising light touch in the Leslie Nielsen role and Pamela Anderson is sweet and sexy as his love interest. Fun movie that lives up to the franchise’s legacy.
3. The Tank (2026)
What Kind of Movie: War Drama
Who’s In It: David Schütter, Laurence Rupp
Another surprise for the list. The Tank is a German-made anti-war film about a German Tiger tank crew that searches for a lost lieutenant in World War II. Despite so-so reviews (61 score at Rotten Tomatoes), the movie has been a consistent Top 10 title for Amazon since its debut last week.
2. Beast Games
What Kind of Show: Reality/Competition
Who’s In It: Mr. Beast
Mr. Beast, the social media titan also known as Jimmy Donaldson, is back on Amazon for another season of death-defying competition for cash prizes. In this installment, which debuted yesterday, 100 ‘smart’ contestants battle 100 ‘strong’ contestants in various athletic and mental challenges with the winning team scoring $5 million.
1. Fallout – Two Seasons
What Kind of Show: Post-apocalyptic Drama
Who’s In It: Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins
Based on the role-playing video game series, Fallout stars Ella Purnell as Lucy, a nuclear apocalypse survivor who leaves her bunker to search for her father in devastated Los Angeles. Walton Goggins (Justified) plays a dangerous bounty hunter who has transformed into a living ghoul. The show has received strong critical reviews with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a score of 93.
