When Will DIRECTV‘s Satellite Customers Get Free Access to the New ESPN App?

TV Answer Man, can you tell us when DIRECTV’s satellite subscribers will get full access to the new ESPN app? We can’t get ESPN+ stuff and it’s very frustrating? – Jim, Mobile, Alabama.

Jim, ESPN this week launched its new unlimited app for cord cutters which includes live feeds of all ESPN channels, ESPN on ABC live sporting events, ESPN+ live events, and a large library of on-demand programming, among other features.

DIRECTV’s streaming customers (along with Fubo, Spectrum TV and Hulu Live subscribers) received free and full access to the ESPN app at launch. However, DIRECTV‘s satellite customers did not; they can not access the ESPN+ portion of the app.

So, when will the satellite subscribers get what streaming now gets?

DIRECTV says that free and full access to the ESPN app will come this fall. However, the TV provider has not provided a launch date which could add to the frustration level. Fall starts in September and runs until December. So it could be months before the access is granted by DIRECTV‘s statement.

That said, I suspect it will be sooner than later. But The TV Answer Man will monitor this situation and report back here when the change is made.

Until then, happy viewing and stay safe!

I’m on stream Roku and no box or air. I used my Directv sign in all went well, except ESPN+, it asked for sign in separately and Directv would. It work. I signed for Plus trial a few weeks ago and had to use it. I was hoping to save the cost of Plus with Directv paying for it.. Guess not.
