DIRECTV to Satellite Subs: Could Be December Before You Get Full ESPN App Access

TV Answer Man, I can’t understand why DIRECTV’s streaming subs can get the whole ESPN app when we satellite customers can’t. I know they say we will get it in the fall but do you have any specific time on that? PLEASE?! – Robbie, Tucson, Arizona.

Robbie, the new ESPN Unlimited app has all the ESPN live channel feeds and on-demand programming. Both DIRECTV’s satellite and streaming customers who have ESPN in their plans get free access to that. But streaming subscribers also get free access to ESPN+ which has a slew of exclusive live games plus premium events such as last night’s Wrestlepalooza and the NHL Power Play.

DIRECTV’s PR department has said its satellite customers will get access to the ESPN+ programming sometime in the fall, but it hasn’t provided an exact date. Since fall is now starting and extends until December, that has triggered considerable frustration among satellite subscribers.

However, we now have some clarity from DIRECTV, albeit not from the PR department but from its X customer service team. In response to numerous customer inquiries on the social media site, DIRECTV’s X team is saying that it could be the end of November before some satellite subscribers get free and full access to the ESPN app.

“If you have DIRECTV Satellite with a Signature Package, you can’t activate ESPN Unlimited online right now. Instead, you’ll receive an activation email by the end of November 2025,” the DIRECTV customer response team wrote last night.

“Most Satellite customers with a Signature Package will receive an activation email for ESPN Unlimited before the end of November 2025. We appreciate your understanding,” another customer was told.

The response angered several DIRECTV satellite customers who could not watch last night’s Wrestlepalooza.

“So because I have the satellite I can’t watch it? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of. What’s the difference in satellite and streaming,” wrote DIRECTV subscriber BBN.

In some customer responses, the DIRECTV X team suggested the activation delay for satellite was designed to prevent excessive traffic on the new app which could lead to viewing interruptions.

“While it’s already available for DIRECTV Streaming customers, most Satellite customers with a Signature Package will get an activation email before the end of November 2025, as the rollout is being done in stages to make the transition as smooth as possible,” DIRECTV told one customer.

So, Robbie, I can’t tell you exactly when you will get full access to the ESPN app, but it could be chilly and snowing when you do.
