DIRECTV Launches MyKids Genre Plan; Adds CBS to MySports

DIRECTV today has expanded its offering of genre-based packages with a new plan consisting of children’s programming called MyKids.
The package, which costs $19.99 a month, includes BabyFirst, Boomerang, the Cartoon Network, Discovery Family Channel, the Disney Channel, Disney Jr., Nick Jr., Nickelodeon, Nicktoons and TeenNick.
In addition to the basic cable children’s networks, the plan includes Disney Plus’ ads-included service for free.
Like DIRECTV’s other genre plans, which includes ones for sports, news entertainment and Spanish programming, MyKids is only available to streaming customers, not the satellite audience.
The introduction of MyKids was enabled by a new agreement between DIRECTV and Paramount Global which allows the TV provider to offer the programmer’s kids channels such as Nickelodeon in the new plan.
In addition, the deal allows DIRECTV to provide Paramount basic cable channels BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, MTV2, Paramount Network, POP, TV Land, and VH1 in its $34.99 a month MyEntertainment plan.
And all 15 of the major-market CBS-owned-and-operated local broadcast stations are now available in their markets in the $69.99 a month MySports package. Until now, MySports did not include any CBS programming, a major omission since the network has the rights to such high-profile sporting events as March Madness. MySports now also includes the CBS Sports Network channel, also owned by Paramount Global.
DIRECTV is hoping that the genre plans, which are less expensive than the traditional programming bundle, will appeal to cost-conscious consumers who have shifted to streaming due to escalating cable/satellite monthly bills.
