TV Answer Man, I am thinking of getting DIRECTV’s Sports Pack because it’s free for a month. But does it have blackouts on the regional sports channels? When I had it a few years ago, I remember that you could watch the baseball games on the RSNs when I had a dish but my friend swears that you can’t. – Andy, Manhattan Beach, California.
Andy, DIRECTV’s Sports Pack, which is available on DIRECTV and DIRECTV Stream, is a $14.99 a month add-on package that includes more than 20 national sports networks and out-of-market programming from more than 30 regional sports networks (RSN). DIRECTV is now offering the sports package for free for one month if you have a Signature package, such as Entertainment, Choice or Ultimate.
Can You Watch Out-of-Market Games On DIRECTV’s Sports Pack?
The package is a nice addition for the rabid sports fan, but it needs to be stressed that you cannot watch most live sporting events on the RSNs. For example, if the Boston Red Sox were playing on NESN, that game would be blacked out unless you lived in the Red Sox market. However, you could watch other shows on NESN, such as news and studio programs on New York area teams.
When Could You Watch Out-of-Market Games On DIRECTV’s Sports Pack?
Andy, if you previously were able to watch out-of-market games on the Sports Pack, it’s probably because you had DIRECTV’s MLB Extra Innings package which does include out-of-market MLB games. The games would have been available on the RSN’s regular channel because you subscribed to that package. If you didn’t have Extra Innings, the channel would have been blacked out when a live MLB was airing.
This is the same policy for the NBA and NHL games. You don’t get the live games of the professional teams, but you do get the supplemental programming.
