TV Answer Man, I was looking at the new pricing for the DIRECTV new streaming plans and it looks like the prices are lower. They are only $89.99 for the Choice plan and it used to be more than $100. Am I seeing this right? Did they actually cut the price? – Bob, Cleveland.
Bob, DIRECTV on Sunday unveiled a new branding offering for its streaming plans. Instead of selling two separate packages with different names – DIRECTV Stream and DIRECTV via Internet – the TV provider will offer streaming under one brand, DIRECTV, at DIRECTV.com.
Is DIRECTV’s Choice Plan Just $89.99?
The new setup also seems to feature new pricing for new subscribers of DIRECTV’s streaming packages. Choice for example, is now listed at $89.99 a month for new customers instead of $114.99 a month, which was the regular price for DIRECTV Stream prior to Sunday’s change. However, the real price for DIRECTV’s Choice streaming plan now is not $89.99 because the plan includes a required regional sports fee which can be as high as $17.99 a month. So the real price is $107.98 a month if you get Choice without DIRECTV’s Gemini streaming device. And it’s $117.98 a month if you get the Gemini device with Choice because it requires a $10 a month rental fee.
The extra charge for the Gemini device, which is supplied by DIRECTV, is an important distinction because I’ve seen some publications report that DIRECTV is now offering the same prices for streaming regardless of whether you use Gemini or your own device, such as Roku or Fire TV. The streaming plans are actually $10 a month more expensive if you get Gemini.
Why the Choice Price Matters
Choice is the cheapest plan on DIRECTV that includes regional sports networks so the entry price is especially important to sports fans.
Why Is DIRECTV Requiring a Regional Sports Fee?
DIRECTV previously included a regional sports fee with its DIRECTV via Internet plans and its satellite packages for Choice plans and above. But it did not include a RSN fee for DIRECTV Stream. However, DIRECTV says the cost of DIRECTV Stream’s Choice plan – $114.99 – included a regional sports expense but it simply wasn’t listed as a line item. Now it’s broken out as a separate fee in the fine print with the overall monthly cost.
The good news here is that the cost of a DIRECTV streaming plan with your own device is now $107.98 a month while it used to be $114.99.

I was ready to buy the subscription to CHOICE until I deleted the Gemini (I have a brand-new TCL Google TV, so I don’t need a dongle hanging off of it). While it dropped the monthly price by $10, it removed the $10 off for 24 months to just 3 months. I may still get the MySports genre pack for $69.99 ($59.99 for the first 2 months), but that’s going to leave a big hole when I drop Spectrum TV. I looked into Hulu + Live TV and saw FanDuel TV included in the base price, but that’s not the same as FanDuel Sports Network. Everything today is a RIP-OFF.
