TV Answer Man, is Tubi the only service offering the Super Bowl this Sunday in 4K? Is the Fox network and Fox Sports app offering the game in 4K as well? Thank you for your information. – Marc, Reading, Massachusetts.
Marc, Fox is offering a free upscaled 4K feed of Sunday’s Super Bowl on Tubi, the Fox-owned free streaming service. But note that to watch the game in 4K on Tubi, you will need one of the following:
Android TV
Roku 4K-enabled streaming device
Amazon Fire TV 4K-enabled device
Apple TV 4K device
That means that 4K TVs which have Android TV software, such as select sets from Sony, TCL, Hisense, Philips, Sharp and Toshiba, will be able to stream the game in 4K using the Tubi or Fox Sports app. If your streaming device uses Android TV software, that should work, too, even if it’s not listed above.
However, if your set does not have Android TV software, it will not be able to stream the game in 4K unless you use a compatible 4K-enabled streaming device such as Roku or Fire TV. Television models that do not use Android TV include LG, which uses its own webOS software, and Samsung, which uses the Tizen TV software. Vizio also uses a proprietary software.
Update: This article earlier said the Fox Sports app would show the game in 4K, but Fox now says that is not the case.
In addition to the Tubi 4K feed, the following TV providers will carry the Super Bowl’s 4K broadcast on special 4K channels: DIRECTV, Dish, Sling TV, Comcast, Verizon, Optimum, DIRECTV Stream, YouTube TV, and FuboTV. (In FuboTV markets where the Fox affiliate is provided with your programming package.) Check your on-screen guide and provider for more details.
Update: Cox will also offer the game in 4K.
Note that YouTube TV is offering the 4K Super Bowl for free to subscribers who have not used the streamer’s 4K Plus plan. See this article for more details.
Finally, what is Upscaled 4K?
The Fox 4K broadcast will be ‘upscaled’ from 1080p HD. The upscaled 4K means that the game will be produced in 1080p HD on site and upgraded to 4K for the home transmission. Upscaled 4K adds colors and vividness to the HD picture but does not provide as much detail as a ‘native 4K’ broadcast, which is when networks produced the event on site in 4K (using 4K cameras) and transmits it in 4K.
Marc, hope that helps. Happy viewing and stay safe!
