TV Answer Man, I saw your article on regional sports networks on Comcast. Could you share more details on its Popular TV plan? Sounds like it could be an option for us in our area since it’s about the same price as some of the streamers. – Peter, Philadelphia.
Peter, Comcast’s Xfinity TV has two main TV packages for new customers: The Popular TV plan, which costs around $100 a month, and the Ultimate TV package, which costs around $125 a month. The prices, which do not require signing a two-year agreement, may vary by a few dollars depending upon the market. However, they include the Broadcast TV and regional sports fee so if you get the Popular plan, you’ll pay around $100 a month, not including taxes. (Comcast offers lower prices to new subscribers if they agree to a two-year contract.)
The biggest difference between Popular and Ultimate is the number of channels in each plan, and in some markets, the availability of a regional sports network. Popular TV has roughly 125 channels (not counting multiple versions of certain channels including locals) while Ultimate has around 185 channels.
Also, during the last year, Comcast has moved the regional sports network (RSN) in several markets from the Popular package to the Ultimate plan including MASN in the Washington, D.C. market; Root Sports in the greater Seattle area; NESN and NBC Sports Boston in the Boston market; SportsNet Pittsburgh in the Pittsburgh market; NBC Sports Philadelphia+ in the Philadelphia area; and NBC Bay Area and NBC California in northern California.
The cable operator may move more RSNs from Popular to Ultimate in the coming months. So if local sports are important to you, you might want to check whether Popular has a RSN before subscribing. If not, you may need to upgrade to Ultimate.
At around $100 a month, the Popular plan still costs more than some streaming plans such as Fubo, which starts at $74.99 a month, and Sling TV, which starts at $46 a month. However, if the Popular package has a RSN in your market, the price is less than DIRECTV Stream’s least expensive plan with a RSN, which is Choice at $114.99 a month. So before subscribing, you might want to do some comparison shopping.
That said. here is the
