Hulu next month (January 2025) plans to add 59 movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the five best, in my humble opinion.

Heat (1995)
Michael Mann’s classic heist film pits master thief Robert De Niro against world-weary detective Al Pacino in a battle for the ages. This is the first film the two acting legends appeared in the same scene together, and while they share the screen for less than 10 minutes, it’s like watching Michael Jordan play Kobe Bryant in their primes. The intensity pours off the screen as they attempt (even if not consciously) to outdo the other. Almost lost in the novelty of having De Niro and Pacino in the same film is Mann’s incredible vision and direction of Heat which holds your attention for nearly three hours as if it were three minutes. It’s a whirlwind of a movie and increasingly getting recognition as one of the best ever. Debuts January 1.

American Psycho (2000)
The 2000 satirical horror film about a Wall Street broker (Christian Bale) who moonlights as a serial killer is not for all tastes. But if you get the joke, you’ll love this send-up of the young cold mercenaries who sometimes inhabit Manhattan’s financial district. Bale is flawless in the lead and the outstanding supporting cast includes Chloe Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon, Jared Leto and Willem Dafoe. Debuts January 1.

The First 3 John Wick Movies (Counted as one)
Keanu Reeves stars as the retired hit man who returns to the killing fields when Russian mobsters do away with a loved one (no, spoilers here). The first three John Wick films may be short on originality, but they breathe new life in the vengeance genre thanks to Reeves’ charisma and athleticism. The Matrix star still has all the moves, and they are in frequent display here. Debuts January 1.

The King of Comedy (1983)
De Niro again in this black comedy from director Martin Scorsese about a nobody who obsesses of landing a stand-up spot on a late-night talk show. Jerry Lewis plays the talk show host with low-key charisma and De Niro is fascinating as the psycho comedian wannbe, Rupert Pupkin. The film received mixed reviews upon release but The King of Comedy was ahead of its time in portraying the dangerous lure of fame, something quite apparent in the era of Tik Tok. Debuts January 1.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009)
Kevin James stars as a bumbling New Jersey mall security guard who must rescue a group of hostages trapped during a store heist. KJ has faded somewhat from the limelight in recent years, but his work here reminds us that he was a very presence on TV and movies for several years a few decades ago. Amusing film albeit with a predictable plot. Debuts January 1.
