Netflix, Hulu, Max, Peacock and Amazon’s Prime Video this week (October 20-26, 2024) plan to add 46 new TV shows and movies to their streaming lineups. Here’s the five you should check out, in my humble opinion:

Escape at Dannemora: Season 1 – Netflix
Based on a true story, Patricia Arquette plays an upstate New York prison employee who falls in love with two prisoners (Benicio del Toro and Paul Dano) and then aids in their escape. The seven-episode series, which was directed by Ben Stiller, and originally aired on Showtime in 2018, is an absorbing portrayal of human frailty and the need for connection regardless of the circumstances. Debuts on Netflix on Tuesday, October 22.

The Comeback: 2004 Boston Red Sox — Netflix Sports Series
Was it really 20 years ago that the Boston Red Sox shocked the sports world by defeating the New York Yankees in a playoff series after being down, 3-0? Netflix’s sport doc team chronicles the incredible comeback with interviews featuring former GM Theo Epstein and players Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz, and Kevin Millar. Debuts on Netflix on Wednesday, October 23.

Trap (2024) – Max
Josh Hartnett stars as a father who accompanies his teen daughter to a pop star’s concert in Philadelphia only to soon discover it’s a trap for a notorious serial killer. The film, directed with characteristic puck by the master of the twist, M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Old), works largely because of Hartnett’s flawless performance as the Dad in distress. He’s become a great leading man and, despite his character’s flaws (no spoilers here!), you root for him as he tries to solve his dilemma. I saw this when it opened in the theater earlier this year. It’s not the best Shyamalan, but I would rank it in his top five. Trivia: Shyamalan’s real-life daughter plays the pop star. Debuts on Max on Friday, October 25.

This is the Zodiac Speaking — Netflix Documentary
I don’t know if the Zodiac Killer, who murdered five people in Northern California in the 1970s, is the most famous serial killer of all time. But he’s undoubtedly Hollywood’s favorite serial killer of all time with dozens of movies, documentaries and TV series devoted to his misdeeds. The fascination, of course, comes from the fact that he was never caught, or identified, but this Netflix doc purports to have the scoop, or at least enough evidence to point the finger. Debuts on Netflix on Wednesday, October 23.

Kate Beckinsale in Canary Black.

Canary Black (2024) – Amazon’s Prime Video
Kate Beckinsale stars as a CIA agent whose husband (Rupert Friend) is kidnapped by terrorists and his only means of escape is if she provides compromising information about her government. Beckinsale is well versed in the action genre (Underworld, Van Helsing, Jolt) so it should be a diverting two hours if you dim the lights and your expectations at the same time. Pierre Morel, who directed Taken, the 2008 Liam Neeson action/thriller, is behind the camera here, too, which is a good sign. Debuts on Amazon on Thursday, October 24.
