Netflix this week (September 15-21, 2024) plans to add 20 new TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the three most interesting new titles, in my humble opinion:
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story
From the Ryan Murphy pulp factory comes Monsters, The Lyle and Erik Menendez, a nine-episode retelling of the real-life 1996 slaying of a wealthy Beverly Hills couple at the hands of their narcissistic sons. The crime has previously been picked over by numerous Hollywood production teams, but this one promises to be different thanks to the chilling performance by Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men) as the sons’ allegedly abusive father, Jose Menendez. The strong supporting cast also includes Murphy regulars Chloe Sevigny as the mother, Kitty Menendez, and Nathan Lane as gossip columnist Dominick Dunne. All nine episodes debut Thursday, September 19.
American Gangster (2007)
The 2007 crime drama from director Ridley Scott stars Denzel Washington as real-life Harlem drug kingpin Frank Lucas and Russell Crowe as the cop who brings him down. Denzel is at his charismatic best as the crime boss; you can’t take his eyes off him. And Crowe is equally good as the randy but relentless detective. (And there are few directors better than Ridley Scott.) Masterful work all around.
30 For 30
Netflix continues to add from ESPN’s library of outstanding 30 for 30 sports documentaries and this week sees five new installments, including an exceptional look (Catholics vs. Convicts) at a 1988 college football game between Notre Dame and the University of Miami.
