Hulu tomorrow (August 1, 2024) plans to add 43 new movies to its subscription Video on Demand service. Here’s the four best, in my humble opinion:
Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Director Kathryn Bigelow’s intense 2012 drama starring Jessica Chastain as a relentless CIA agent who hunts for the masterminds behind the 9/11 attack on America. The film was seen by some as glorifying the extralegal tactics required to obtain leads in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. But it fairly characterizes the pain and zeal felt by the intelligence/military personnel at the time. And Chastain is riveting as a CIA case officer who can’t sit still (literally) until she finds her man.
Raising Arizona (1987)
The 1987 Coen Brothers movie stars Nic Cage and Holly Hunter as a dysfunctional young couple whose solution to infertility is kidnapping. That may not sound like a suitable premise for a comedy, even a black comedy, but you don’t know the Coens, do you? This is brilliant filmmaking overflowing with laughs and masterful turns from Cage and Hunter.
Casino (1995)
Director Martin Scorsese’s brilliant cinematic essay on the rise and fall of the Mob-controlled Las Vegas stars Robert De Niro as an obsessive gambler named Ace Rothstein who’s hired to operate a casino. Ace’s master plan is soon derailed by his chorus girl wife (played beautifully by Sharon Stone) and a ruthless sidekick (played deliciously over the top by Joe Pesci.) While some critics chafed that Casino did not measure up to Scorsese’s Goodfellas, the 1995 is an iconic classic on its own.
Eddie Murphy: Raw (1987)
Eddie Murphy is one of the most gifted comedians ever but younger Americans may forget that he was once a force of nature on stage and in Saturday Night Live sketches before making a series of unforgettable (and sometimes forgettable) Hollywood movies such as Beverly Hills Cop and 48 Hours. Eddie Murphy: Raw, a one-man stand-up show filmed at the Felt Forum in New York City, is a 90- minute showcase of his genius as he skewers such (then) sacred cows as Bill Cosby, Michael Jackson and the sanctity of marriage.
