Paramount+ with Showtime, the streaming service, plans to remove 57 movies from its lineup after June 30, 2024. Here are five you definitely want to watch before they leave, in my humble opinion:
Magnolia (1999)
The satirical drama from director Paul Thomas Anderson features the lost souls of San Fernando Valley as played by the brilliant ensemble cast of Tom Cruise, Jason Robards, Julianne Moore, William H. Macy, John C. Reilly, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Melora Walters. Magnolia doesn’t get the love of PTA’s previous film, Boogie Nights, but it’s a thrilling piece of cinema that will leave you wanting even more after three hours and eight minutes.
Fatal Attraction (1987)
The 1987 drama from director Adrian Lyne that did more to curb adultery than any 1,000 sermons. Michael Douglas plays an attorney whose life is turned upside down when he has an affair with a disturbed book editor (Glenn Close) who’s never met a rabbit she liked. The film is a taut and juicy depiction of what people will do when emotions are stretched and temptation is dangled.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
The Coen Brothers’ flawless neo-western stars Josh Brolin as a good old boy who stumbles upon a jackpot of money but is then pursued by a ruthless, coin-flipping killer, played deliciously by Javier Bardem. (And let’s not overlook the commanding performance of Tommy Lee Jones as the weather-beaten sheriff.) Joel and Ethan Coen have conspired to make cinema brilliance over the years with films such as Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and Miller’s Crossing. But there may be no better Coen Brothers film than No Country for Old Men. If you haven’t seen it, start streaming.
The Doors (1991)
Oliver Stone’s 1991 love letter to the legendary 1960s band featuring Val Kilmer channeling lead singer (and part poet, part madman) Jim Morrison. The film is a dizzying and vastly entertaining look at an era in music when anything seemed possible and impossible at the same time. (Psychedelics, man.)
Four Indiana Jones Movies
Harrison Ford stars as the meek professor turned swashbuckling archeologist in this quartet of (The Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Lost Crusade, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) of classic action movies from director Steven Spielberg. You may have watched one, or perhaps all of them, but I guarantee you that they are as rewatchable as ever. Pick one today and you won’t be sorry.
Honorable mention to The Wolf of Wall Street, Tropic Thunder, Red Eye, Almost Famous, and Team America: World Police.
