Pluto TV is an ads-supported free streaming service available on your computer, mobile phone or streaming device, such as Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, and Sony and Vizio Smart TVs, among others. The Pluto TV lineup consists of a few hundred channels and thousands of TV shows and movies. The streamer, in fact, just added roughly 300 new movies to its On Demand lineup. And they are all free, albeit with minimum ad interruptions. Here’s a sampling of some of the better additions, in my humble opinion:
Heat (1995)
Michael Mann’s classic heist film pits master thief Robert De Niro against world-weary detective Al Pacino in a battle for the ages. This is the first film the two acting legends appeared in the same scene together, and while they share the screen for less than 10 minutes, it’s like watching Michael Jordan play Kobe Bryant in their primes. The intensity pours off the screen as they attempt (even if not consciously) to outdo the other. Almost lost in the novelty of having De Niro and Pacino in the same film is Mann’s incredible vision and direction of Heat which holds your attention for nearly three hours as if it were three minutes. It’s a whirlwind of a movie and increasingly getting recognition as one of the best ever.
Crash (2004)
The 2004 drama directed by Paul Haggis examines the racial and social divides that separate Los Angeles through the eyes of a myriad collection of characters played by Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon, Don Cheadle, Terrence Howard, Brendan Fraser and Jennifer Esposito, among many others. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, although some critics scoffed, saying Crash is manipulative. But isn’t that what film is supposed to be?
Salt (2010)
Directed by Phillip Noyce, Salt is a pulse-pounding espionage thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Angelina Jolie’s dynamic performance as CIA officer Evelyn Salt, accused of being a Russian spy, is a riveting blend of grit and vulnerability. The film’s intricate plot twists, heart-pounding action sequences, and Jolie’s captivating portrayal make for an exhilarating cinematic experience, albeit occasionally veering into implausibility.
Mission Impossible (1996)
Director Brian De Palma’s original Mission Impossible film laid the foundation for the franchise’s success. Tom Cruise as secret agent Ethan Hunt finds himself embroiled in a web of betrayal and deceit. The iconic scenes, such as the daring wire descent into a secure room and the suspenseful train sequence, remain gripping nearly three decades later. (Pluto TV also just added Mission Impossible 2, 3 and 4.)
There Will Be Blood (2007)
Daniel Day-Lewis puts on an actor’s master class as Daniel Plainview, a 19th Century oilman who will stop at nothing to achieve wealth and power. The film, directed with perfection by Paul Thomas Anderson, is a snapshot of our nation as it begins its transition from a frontier land to a highly developed capitalist empire. And what a snapshot it is. PTA’s use of the camera is characteristically magnificent with some of the most beautiful and gripping shots you’ll ever see. Great acting. Great direction. Great movie.
