TV Answer Man, do you know when the streaming ESPN channel will launch? I would like to subscribe to it directly so I don’t have to pay for a big cable or YouTube TV package. – Sam, Landover, Maryland.
Sam, Disney says it expects to launch the standalone ESPN streaming channel sometime in the fall of this year. The company has not offered pricing details but it’s likely to be around $30 a month. If you love ESPN, and watch little or nothing else, it would certainly be a money saver. ESPN is normally bundled in a cable, streaming or satellite plan costing anywhere from $80 to $100 a month.
(The ESPN standalone streamer will be a simulcast of the entire ESPN lineup, including ESPN 2, ESPN3, ESPNU and ESPNews. This is in contrast to the current ESPN+ streaming service which has select programming from the ESPN lineup as well as other broadcasts and on-demand programming.)
Until ESPN standalone debuts, your best option to get ESPN without paying a fortune is Sling TV. The multi-channel live streamer has the sports network in its Orange plan (along with 33 other channels) for just $23 for the first month. The regular rate of $46 a month will apply in month two and beyond. The first month promotional price is likely less than what the ESPN standalone service will charge while the regular rate may be just $15 a month or so more.
Plus, you get those 33 additional channels which include The Disney Channel, TBS and TNT (more sports) and many other basic cable favorites. Below is the…
