TV Answer Man, I am interested in this new DIRECTV MySports plan but does it have regional sports networks? That’s critical for me as a Red Sox fan. – Todd, Worcester, Massachusetts.
Todd, DIRECTV today introduced a new all-sports plan called MySports that includes roughly 40 channels for $70 a month. (Consumers who sign up online for the contract-free package before February 28, 2025, can receive MySports for $49.99 monthly for the first three months, a $20 monthly savings.)
The channels include such top-rated sports nets as ESPN, Fox Sports 1, MLB Network, NFL Network as well as niche nets such as ACC Network, Big Ten Network, Golf Channel and the SEC Network among others.
The new package is initially available in 24 markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco. You can learn more about the lineup and markets at the MySports site here.
But does MySports offer your regional sports network, you ask? Or any regional sports networks?
Answer: No. And that’s a big hole for a package that calls itself, MySports. The rabid sports fan is usually intensely interested in his or her local teams and the only way to watch them in most cases is via the regional sports network (RSN).
Without your local RSN on MySports, you would need another subscription of some kind to complete your sports lineup. That could be another pay TV service, which seems to defeat the point of MySports, or a direct-to-consumer RSN plan, if one exists for your local RSN. The latter could add another $20-30 a month to your cost, which again seems to defeat the point of MySports, which is to keep costs down.
Adding insult to injury, MySports also doesn’t have CBS yet which means no NFL playoff games during the rest of January. And if CBS isn’t added by March, forget roughly half of the March Madness college basketball games.
Update: A DIRECTV spokesman says there are plans to make RSNs an add-on in the future.
Todd, hope that helps. Happy viewing and stay safe!
