This weekend (September 12-15, 2024), Netflix, Hulu, Amazon’s Prime Video, and Max will add 47 new TV shows and movies to their lineups. Here’s the four most interesting, in my humble opinion.

The Old Man: Season 2 Premiere – FX on Hulu
Jeff Bridges stars as Dan Chase, a former (and dangerous) CIA agent whose secret hideaway is suddenly disturbed after 30 years when he’s attacked by professional assassin. After disposing with his attacker, Chase goes on the run but discovers his own government is trying to kill him at the behest of a foreign adversary. John Lithgow plays a high-ranking FBI officer who’s involved in the chase for Chase. And Alia Shawkat is his loyal young assistant who has a mysterious tie to Chase. The Old Man is a terrific cat-and-mouse show with superb performances by all three as well as from Amy Brenneman as a neighbor in the wrong place at the wrong time. Binge season one on Hulu and then tune in for the season two premiere on Friday, September 13, one day after the FX premiere on September 12. This is great episodic television.

Emily In Paris – Season 4: Part 2  – Netflix Original
Lily Collins is back as Emily Cooper, the American ingenue who moves to Paris to teach a Parisian marketing firm a few things about American ingenuity. Or so she thinks. Along the way, she encounters irresistible Parisian men, confounding language barriers and other obstacles that only Emily could find. The Netflix original comedy is a feel-good delight with Collins a revelation in the title role; her performance is a throwback to those classic comedic single-woman turns from the 1960s/70s (Mary Tyler Moore in The Mary Tyler Moore Show; Marlo Thomas in That Girl, etc.). In season four (part one of S4 debuted in August, now available on Netflix), Emily set her sights on Gabriel now that he’s single while making a side trip to another confusing land. The second half of season four will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, September 12.

Civil War (2024) – Max
Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura stars as journalists who risk life and limb to travel to Washington, D.C. to interview the president (Nick Offerman) during a modern-day civil war between the federal government and successionists. The film, directed and written by Alex Garland, received strong critical response for its portrayal of a nation in crisis and how easily these events could happen in real life. Debuts on Max on Friday, September 13.

The Grand Tour: One for the Road (2024) – Amazon
The automotive enthusiast series comes to an end as Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May take one last ride for the cameras after 22 years of television. In this final episode, the three motor through Zimbabwe in a Lancia Montecarlo, a Ford Capri 3-litre, and a Triumph Stag. Debuts Friday, September 13 on Amazon’s Prime Video.
