Peacock today (August 1, 2024) has added 91 new movies to its lineup. Here’s the five best, in my humble opinion:
Casino (1995)
Director Martin Scorsese’s brilliant cinematic essay on the rise and fall of the Mob-controlled Las Vegas stars Robert De Niro as an obsessive gambler named Ace Rothstein who’s hired to operate a casino. Ace’s master plan is soon derailed by his chorus girl wife (played beautifully by Sharon Stone) and a ruthless sidekick (played deliciously over the top by Joe Pesci.) While some critics chafed that Casino did not measure up to Scorsese’s Goodfellas, the 1995 is an iconic classic on its own.
Do The Right Thing (1989)
Spike Lee’s masterpiece stars the director as a pizza delivery employee who tries to navigate a hot summer day in race-torn Brooklyn. The film still provokes controversy for its brutal characterizations of both white and black Brooklynites but it’s an absorbing and often funny look the deep divide between races and cultures.
Field of Dreams (1989)
This fantasy sports film stars Kevin Costner as a struggling Iowa farmer who’s summoned by the ghosts of the game to build a baseball field on his property. Only prime Costner (or maybe Tom Hanks) could pull this premise off, but it’s a great and tearjerking movie about baseball, family and the power of nostalgia. And you don’t have to be a baseball fan to love this sweet-hearted film.
Moneyball (2011)
Brad Pitt stars as Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane who uses modern analytics to assemble a playoff team on a shoestring budget. Based on Michael Lewis’ book, the movie glosses over some of the real reasons why the A’s made it to the playoffs (the team had one of the best trio of starters in the game: Tim Hudson, Barry Zito and Mark Mulder) but Pitt wins the day with a real movie star performance. You root for him from beginning to end as he schools the old school crowd.
Mean Girls (2004)
Written by 30 Rock’s Tina Fey, who also plays a teacher here, the 2004 comedy stars Lindsay Lohan as a high school student who befriends a gaggle of popular but bitchy classmates played by Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert. The decision leads to a series of misadventures and backstabbing as well as various plots of revenge. Mean Girls is a funny and smart take on high school life from one of America’s greatest living satirists, Ms. Fey.
