Peacock next month (August 2024) plans to add 142 TV shows and movies to its lineup. Here’s the three most interesting, in my humble opinion:
The Bikeriders (2023)
Austin Butler (Elvis, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood) stars as a mercurial motorcycle gang member in the 1960s who gets caught up in the byzantine wars between rival gangs which leads to mayhem and murder. Jodie Comer plays his girlfriend who embraces the gang life despite the dangers while Tom Hardy is the uber-violent gang leader. Based on a real story, The Bikeriders, which will make its streaming debut on Peacock, was a critical success, generating an 81 score at Rotten Tomatoes.”Fueled by a charismatic cast and the gritty authenticity of writer-director Jeff Nichols’ approach, The Bikeriders offers a conventional yet impactful look at motorcycle culture,” the site states. Debuts August 9.
The Fall Guy (2024)
Peacock gets another streaming debut with a recent theatrical film with The Fall Guy which stars Ryan Gosling as a Hollywood stunt man whose work in his ex-girlfriend’s (Emily Blunt) film gets complicated when the lead actor mysteriously disappears. The director asks him to find the actor which turns out to be his most dangerous stunt yet. The comedy/adventure film is one of the great popcorn movies of the year, which means dim the lights, and your expectations, before viewing and you’ll enjoy. Debuts August 30.
Homicide: Life on the Street (All seven seasons)
Homicide: Life on the Street, which aired on NBC for seven seasons (1993-99), stars the late Andre Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Thief, Gideon’s Crossing) as Frank Pembleton, a mercurial but brilliant detective on a murder squad in Baltimore. But the show, which it says here was one of television’s greatest ever, was truly the product of an incredible ensemble cast (Yaphet Kotto, Richard Belzer, Kyle Secor, Clark Johnson, Melissa Leo, Ned Beatty, among so many other outstanding performers) and equally talented writing and production team including Barry Levinson, Paul Attanasio, and Tom Fontana.
And, in August, it’s finally coming to streaming!
Peacock, which is operated by NBCUniversal, will add all seven seasons of Homicide: Life on the Street on August 19. Even better, the show, which was broadcast in standard-definition, will be remastered to HD and 4K.
Homicide: Life on the Street has never been available via streaming except for a few random episodes on YouTube. Show producers and writers, including Barry Levinson, often expressed frustration about the omission. In fact, Levinson told the New York Times last year that he had no idea why a streaming service couldn’t show it. But whatever the obstacle was, it’s been removed. Debuts August 19.
