Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max, this week (June 30-July 6, 2024) plans to add 86 new TV shows and movies. Here are the three most interesting, in my humble opinion:
Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants (HBO Original)
The title says this year’s edition of HBO’s Hard Knocks will present the offseason with the New York Giants. That seems appropriate since the Giants had another ‘off season’ in 2023, finishing a disappointing 6-11. However, the Hard Knocks look at the team as it enters its 100th season should be entertaining with a motley crew of colorful characters on hand such as quarterback Daniel Jones recovering from a torn ACL and first round draft pick Malik Nabers. The doc will show the team’s planning sessions during the 2024 draft, minicamps and the NFL Combine. Debuts Tuesday, July 2.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966)
Mike Nichols’ directorial debut is a sensation thanks to two powerhouse performances from Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton as a warring married couple who live to booze and taunt (each other and their dinner guests played by George Segal and Sandy Dennis.) The Ernest Lehman screenplay, based on the Edward Albee play, is a chilling commentary on the illusions of marriage as well as a winking nod to the battling Bickersons of real life, Liz and Dick. WAVW will make you think about, laugh at and cry for the on-screen (and off-screen) personas who can’t resist inflicting pain where it hurts the most, particularly when it’s so perversely entertaining. Debuts Monday, July 1.
Contraband: Seized at the Border, Season 4 (Discovery Original)
The Discovery docuseries examines the ongoing crisis on the Mexican/U.S. border where border agents’ mission impossible is to stop the overwhelming flow of illegal migrants, asylum seekers and drugs as well as the possibility of terrorism. The 12-episode season four chronicles what goes on behind the scenes when agents are outmanned and, in some cases, outgunned. Debuts Tuesday, July 2.
