Apple TV+ will remove 56 movies after Sunday, June 30, 2024, some of which are available in 4K. Here are the 12 best films to watch before they leave.
Inception (2010)
Inception, the 2010 mind-bending sci-fi drama from director Chris Nolan (Oppenheimer) which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a thief who steals information by entering another’s mind. Great movie, but if you’re not a chess player, prepared to get lost in the plot a few times.
Scarface (1983)
The brilliant Brian De Palma-directed drama stars Al Pacino as Cuban refugee Tony Montana who discovers crime does pay, and exceedingly well, in coke-fueled 1980s Miami. While Scarface may be — okay, is — too violent for some, the film perfectly chronicles the era’s thirst for excess and hedonism through the eyes of Montana. Michelle Pfeiffer is flawless as Montana’s ice-cold, white powder-sniffing moll and the splendid supporting cast also includes Steven Bauer, Robert Loggia, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and F. Murray Abraham. Great movie, and don’t forget to say hello to Tony’s little friend.
Tombstone (1993)
Tombstone, the 1993 western starring Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as Doc ‘I’m Your Huckleberry’ Holliday. Russell is good, but Kilmer is masterful in the role of the terminally ill gunslinger who seems to tempt (and cheat) death at every turn.
Gone Girl (2014)
The brilliant 2014 film from director David Fincher about a wife (Rosamund Pike) who fakes her disappearance to frame her philandering husband (Ben Affleck). No one does the dark side of humanity better than David Fincher and his exceptional skills are on full display here.
Unforgiven (1992)
Unforgiven, directed by Clint Eastwood, is a haunting Western masterpiece that subverts the genre’s traditional heroism and moral simplicity. The film follows an aging, reformed outlaw, played brilliantly by Eastwood, who is reluctantly drawn back into a life of violence for one last job. The film explores themes of redemption, justice, and the brutality of the human spirit. Excellent supporting performances from Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman and Richard Harris, among others.
Goodfellas (1990)
Martin Scorsese’s brilliant 1990 mob drama starring Ray Liotta (RIP), Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro. Ten years earlier, Scorsese made Raging Bull and it seemed improbable then that he could top such a work of art. But he did. Goodfellas has become one of those movies that you can watch over and over and never be bored.
The Town (2010)
The absorbing 2010 heist drama starring Ben Affleck (who also directed and co-wrote) as a bank robber who courts a beautiful witness (Rebecca Hall) while protecting her from a fellow gang member.
Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy (2004)
Will Ferrell is at his peak zaniness as a narcissistic San Diego news anchor named Ron Burgundy whose perfect life is disrupted when the station hires a female co-anchor, played superbly by Christina Applegate. The film serves as both satire of local news in the 1970s and a showcase for Ferrell’s slapstick genius and the supporting cast is just brilliant including Fred Willard, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, and David Koechner. And don’t miss the amazing news anchor duel with cameos from Ben Stiller, Tim Robbins and Vince Vaughn. Funny film!
The Departed (2006)
The Martin Scorsese 2006 crime drama with Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio playing cat and mouse (and rat) in mob-run Boston.
Field of Dreams (1989)
This fantasy sports film starring Kevin Costner as a struggling farmer in Iowa explores the connection between baseball, family, and nostalgia. Field of Dreams is a heartwarming tale that has touched the souls of sports fans and movie lovers alike. You don’t have to be a baseball fan to love this sweet-hearted film.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Directed by Steven Spielberg, Saving Private Ryan stars Tom Hanks as the captain of a World War II unit which must find a single soldier (Matt Damon) while navigating the horrors of war. There’s never been a better film on the sacrifice and unselfishness of America’s military and Hanks is especially good in lead. And the first 15 minutes, which depicts the D-Day invasion, immerses the viewer in battle unlike any scene before or since.
You’ve Got Mail (1998)
Twenty-six years ago, when You’ve Got Mail premiered, the concept of meeting cute (online) felt so innocent, which was reflected in this sweet and satisfying comedy starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The two stars are at their charming best here as they converse anonymously through America Online (remember, everyone? You’ve Got Mail!) while competing in real life in very different roles in the publishing industry. Having a bad day? You’ve Got Mail will put a smile on your face.
Honorable mentions to The Wolf of Wall Street, Collateral, Apollo 13, Boys Don’t Cry, Contagion and Mystic River.
