Netflix to Add 44 New Shows & Movies This Week – Here Are the 3 to Watch

Netflix this week (June 29-July 5, 2025) plans to add 44 new TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here are the three to watch, in my humble opinion.

The Old Guard 2 (2025) – Netflix Original
Release Date: Wednesday, July 2
Charlize Theron (pictured above) returns as an immortal superhero whose cushy life ride goes south when she loses her key to eternal life. (Bummed when that happens.) However, when an evil group of immortals surfaces, she joins up with her former immortal cohorts to save the world. Okay, sounds ridiculous, but the first film won praise from critics and fans and Uma Thurman joins the cast for the sequel so it can’t be all bad. If you like superhero movies, dim the lights, and your expectations, and stream in.

Portlandia – Seasons 1-8
Release Date: Tuesday, July 1
Fred Armisen (Saturday Night Live) and Carrie Brownstein play multiple characters (and, boy, are they characters!) in this satirical skewering of the hipster side of Portland. Portlandia, which also features guest appearances from a slew of sketch geniuses including Jason Sudeikis, Kristen Wiig, Aubrey Plaza, Parker Posey and Ed Begley, Jr., among dozens of others, is one of the funniest shows of this century. No comedy has done a more effective job of capturing the weird, tribal vibe of identity politics in today’s culture. If you haven’t seen it, and you love satire, start watching. I guarantee you’ll be hooked.

Mission: Impossible (1996)
Release Date: Tuesday, July 1
Director Brian De Palma’s original Mission Impossible film laid the foundation for the franchise’s success. Tom Cruise as secret agent Ethan Hunt finds himself embroiled in a web of betrayal and deceit. The iconic scenes, such as the daring wire descent into a secure room and the suspenseful train sequence, remain gripping nearly three decades later. Note Netflix is adding four other Mission Impossible films on Tuesday and that the last installment in the series, Mission Impossible 8, is now in theaters.
