Dec. 12-15: 5 Best New Titles Coming to Streaming This Weekend (Netflix, Hulu, Max, More)

Netflix, Max, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount Plus and Amazon’s Prime Video this weekend (December 12-15, 2024) plan to add 47 new TV shows and movies to their streaming lineups. Here’s the five most interesting, in my humble opinion:
Carry-On – Netflix
Taron Egerton stars as a TSA agent whose Christmas Eve routine is disrupted when a passenger (Jason Bateman) instructs him not to inspect a mysterious suitcase or he will kill his pregnant girlfriend (Sofia Carson). The cat-and-mouse game begins as Egerton contemplates whether he should alert airport authorities while Bateman says he will raise the stakes if he does. It’s a great premise and the trailer looks equally impressive. Must watch here. Debuts on Netflix on Friday, December 13.
Bookie, Season 2 (Max Original)
Sebastian Maniscalco (The Irishman) plays a bookie on the dark side of LA where gambling will soon be legal and gamblers are more psychopathic than ever. Maniscalco is a gifted comedic and dramatic actor and season two promises some intriguing guest stars including Ray Romano and Charlie Sheen. Season two premiere debuts on Thursday, December 12.
The Joker Folie a Deux (2024)
Joaquin Phoenix is back as The Joker in this sequel to the often-absorbing 2019 film, Joker, but he’s joined by Lady Gaga and it’s a musical drama!? Wait a minute. What?! Yeah, that’s what many of the critics said, too. Why did director Todd Phillips turn this comic book villain into a crooning criminal? The result was mixed, to put it generously, with most fans and reviewers running for the exits. However, some contrarians such as director Quentin Tarantino are still calling it a work of genius, which makes it one of the week’s most interesting titles coming this weekend Debuts on Max on Friday, December 13.
Dexter: Original Sin (Series Premiere) – Paramount Plus With Showtime
Showtime shows us that you can’t keep a good serial killer down. Less than three years after we thought we witnessed the end of Dexter Morgan, the cold-blooded murderer with a code, Showtime returns with a prequel 10-episode series starring Patrick Gibson as young Dex being tutored on how to kill the right way by his policeman Dad, played by Christan Slater. (And Michael C. Hall will apparently find his way back in as the adult Dexter in a continuation of the original Dexter series, which is now in development. Plus, he will deliver ‘the inner voice’ of young Dex in the prequel!) I might hesitate to recommend the prequel which airs this week. However, Clyde Phillips, who served as Dexter’s showrunner in the early seasons, is back to run this one and he’s really good. So, despite Showtime beating a dead horse, so to speak, the odds are good that Dexter: Original Sin will be riveting drama. Debuts Friday, December 13. Paramount Plus with Showtime plan required.
Paris & Nicole: The Encore, Season 1 (Peacock Original)
If you’re under the age of 30 (or perhaps even under 90), this might not mean much to you. But Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie were early reality TV stars in the equally early 00s for their show, The Simple Life, which featured the socialites slumming odd jobs in rural towns. Peacock will try to recreate the magic with The Encore, a new reality show that has the 40-something P & N producing an opera, working at a Sonic fast-food stop and engaging in other hijinks. (I warned you these are the most interesting shows, not necessarily the best.) Debuts on Peacock on Thursday, December 12.
