Max, the streaming service formerly known has HBO Max, this month (December 2024) plans to remove at least 55 movies from its lineup. (Max might announce more removals later in the month.) Here are the four you should definitely watch before they leave, in my humble opinion.

Goodfellas (1990)
Martin Scorsese’s brilliant 1990 mob drama starring Ray Liotta (RIP), Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro. Ten years earlier, Scorsese made Raging Bull and it seemed improbable then that he could top such a work of art. But he did. Goodfellas has become one of those movies that you can watch over and over and never be bored. Leaving after December 31.

Panic Room (2002)
Jodie Foster stars as a mom who squirrels herself and daughter in their ‘panic room’ when a band of burglars break in. What might seem like a pedestrian storyline from there turns into a taut thriller thanks to director David Fincher’s masterful and meticulous staging and bravura performances from Foster, Kristen Stewart as the daughter and Jared Leto, Forest Whitaker and Dwight Yoakam as the thieves. Leaving after December 31.

Dirty Harry (1971)
The 1971 police drama stars Clint Eastwood as the no-blinking San Francisco police detective who sometimes forgets his shot-count. More than 50 years later, the film continues to trigger (pun alert) controversy over its apparent endorsement of unlawful behavior by law enforcement. But it’s a great action film that still holds up. Leaving after December 31.

Judas and the Black Messiah (2021)
The film, which is based on a real-life story, stars LaKeith Stanfield as Bill O’Neal, an FBI informant who infiltrates the Black Panthers during the 1960s to get incriminatory evidence against its leaders. However, O’Neal soon regrets his mission when his work triggers a controversial homicide of the group’s leader, Fred Hampton, played exceptionally by Daniel Kaluuya. Leaving after December 28.
