Why I Refuse to Watch Twisters On Streaming

By Phillip Swann
The TV Answer Man –Follow me on X.

TV Answer Man, I see that Twisters is now on pay per view streaming. I’ve been waiting to see it, but it costs $19.99. Do you think it will come to regular streaming like Netflix soon so I don’t have to pay so much? What would you do if you were me? — Morris, Boston.

Morris, Twisters, the reboot of the 1996 film, Twister, starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, stars Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones as tornado hunters in modern day Oklahoma. The film has generated more than $300 million at the box office which should be no surprise. It’s a whirlwind thrill ride filled with exciting action scenes, strong performances from the leads, and terrific effects including a booming soundtrack.

And that’s why I refused to wait until Twisters hit streaming. Yes, it’s now available to rent on streaming for $19.99. And it will likely debut on Peacock in the next month or two. But this is a movie that should be seen in the movie theater!

Trust me, I have a Home Theater, but there’s nothing to compare to watching Twisters with a group of excited moviegoers in a large dark room with a big screen and state-of-the-art sound system. You will feel this movie, not just watch it, as I did recently at a local theater with my 13-year-old daughter. Unlike home, there were no cell phones, no dogs barking, no bathroom breaks, or anything else that would take us out of our connection with the movie. We felt like we were sitting next to the scientists as they defied death to investigate the origins of the tornados. The sensation simply couldn’t compete with watching it at home.

I know that some analysts say movie theaters are passe, if not nearly extinct. And for some films, such as romantic comedies, I will acknowledge there’s not much difference between watching it at home or in the theater. But for Twisters, and other action-oriented movies, they must be seen in the theater to truly experience them.

Todd, Twisters is still playing in theaters across the country. I would highly recommend checking one out this weekend.

Hope that helps. Happy viewing and stay safe!
