It’s the next to the last weekend of summer before Labor Day. But if you’re not heading to the beach, Netflix, Peacock, Hulu, Amazon’s Prime Video and Max plan to add 42 new titles from Thursday, August 22 through Sunday, August 25. Here’s the four most interesting, in my humble opinion.
The Killer (2024) (Peacock)
Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones) stars in this John Woo-directed film (a remake of this 1989 movie) as an assassin who must commit one final murder before hanging up her holster. Omar Sy (Netflix’s Lupin) plays a detective who’s on her trail. No one does action better than Woo and the trailer looks sensational. (Plus, it’s a Peacock exclusive.) Debuts Friday, August 23.
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) (Amazon’s Prime Video)
Elizabeth Winstead stars as a young woman who wakes up after a car crash in a house where the owner (John Goodman) is keeping her a prisoner. Making matters even more confusing, the homeowner is convinced that they can’t leave the house because there are unknown monsters lurking outside. Is he telling the truth? The young woman doesn’t think so but she’s not totally sure. This is a great premise (and, loosely, a sequel to the 2008 film, Cloverfield) and Winstead and Goodman’s cat-and-mouse play is fun to watch. Debuts Saturday, August 24.
Horizon: An America Saga, Chapter 1 (Max)
The first part of Kevin Costner’s sweeping epic of the American West comes to Max after disappointing box office returns this summer. But don’t be put off by the mixed critical and theatergoer response. The biggest knock against Horizon is its length – 181 minutes — but you can hit the Pause button now that it’s on streaming. (Not that we advocate that.) Horizon (which Costner stars in and directs) chronicles the tensions between white settlers and Native Americans during the Manifest Destiny era of American History. It’s an ambitious, thoughtful and often stirring rendition and well worth your time, even at three hours. Debuts Friday, August 23.
City of God: The Fight Rages On (Max)
In 2002, directors Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund unleashed a dazzling crime drama called City of God, which told the real-life stories of gang warfare and drug addiction in Brazil in the 1980s and 90s. Critics compared it favorably to the work of Martin Scorsese (I agree!) due to its fast cuts and stylized displays of cold-blooded violence. Now, 22 years later, the story finally continues with a TV series exclusively on Max. City of God: The Fight Rages On follows ‘Rocket,’ the star of the film (played by Alexandre Rodrigues), 20 years later after the final scenes. He’s now a photojournalist who reports on the continued war between drug dealers and its impact on the innocent. If the series is half as good as the film, we’re in. Debuts Sunday, August 24. City of God, the film, is now on Paramount Plus.
