FX has finally put The Old Man to sleep. The network has cancelled the show after two seasons.
Jeff Bridges starred in the spy drama as Dan Chase, a former (and dangerous) CIA agent whose secret hideaway is suddenly disturbed after 30 years when he’s attacked by professional assassin. After disposing with his attacker, Chase goes on the run but discovers his own government is trying to kill him at the behest of a foreign adversary. John Lithgow played a high-ranking FBI officer who’s involved in the chase for Chase.
The Old Man generated solid ratings in season one thanks to top-notch performances from Bridges and Lithgow and a fast-paced storyline with plenty of action (or, at least, enough action that a 70something Bridges could handle). But season two was a lackluster follow up, trading the gunplay for long, protracted dialogue between the leads and Alia Shawkat who played Bridges’ daughter. The result was a decline in viewership and FX decided to pull the plug.
Deadline was the first to report the cancellation of The Old Man.
