Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max, plans to add 134 new TV shows and movies (and 25 sports events) in January 2024. Here are the three most interesting, in my humble opinion.

True Detective: Night Country
Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star as detectives in Alaska who investigate the sudden disappearance of eight men who operate the Arctic Research Station. This is season four in HBO’s True Detective anthology, and if this installment is as good as the first three (particularly one and three), it will be must viewing in my household. (But it will be the first season without show creator Nic Pizzolatto so fingers crossed.) Debuts January 14.

Tricky Dick
With 2024 being the 50th anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s resignation, Max rolls out this four-part 2019 CNN original documentary on the man and the myth, and his Machiavellian politics. Debuts January 6.

Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
And speaking of anniversaries, 2024 will mark the 60th year since the world was graced with this brilliant satire of Cold War politics from director Stanley Kubrick. Peter Sellers plays three roles, including the psychotic Dr. Strangelove (modeled, some say, after Henry Kissinger) and the president of the United States (modeled, most say, after serial presidential candidate, the effete Adlai Stevenson.) Debuts January 1.
