Netflix this week (May 26-June 1, 2024) plans to add 43 new TV shows and movies to its streaming lineup. Here’s the three most interesting, in my humble opinion:

Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult
If you weren’t ready to curse TikTok to damnation before, you will after this three-part Netflix documentary on a California pastor who lured aspiring young dancers on the social media app to join his cult and sever all family ties. The doc, which includes interviews with the victims, is a cautionary tale of the dangers of showcasing your talents (and vulnerabilities) on the public web, particularly TikTok which seems to have little safeguards against the exploitation of the young. Debuts Wednesday, May 29.

La La Land (2016)
And if Dancing for the Devil puts you in the dumps, La La Land is guaranteed to lift your spirits and perhaps your feet as well. Directed by Damien Chazelle, the film stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a struggling jazz pianist and actress respectively in cold-hearted Los Angeles. However, their dreams fuel a zest for life that keeps them on their toes, literally and figuratively. A throwback to the great MGM musicals of the 1940s, La La Land is a feast for the eyes (and the soul) and was wholly worthy of its Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Debuts June 1.

1917 (2019)
Directed by Sam Mendes, 1917 is the story of two British soldiers who risk everything to deliver a crucial message to the troops before a doomed offensive in World War I. The film puts the viewer in the middle of the combat as well as the psyches of the two soldiers who suppress all survival instincts for the greater cause. Great film from a great director. Debuts June 1.
